Panama 2026

Few countries pack as much avian diversity into such a small space as Panama. Over 18 days I traveled through four of its distinct regions — the humid central lowlands, the western Pacific foothills and tropical savannah, the misty mountains of the Chiriqui Cordillera, and the dense rainforest of the Darién. For 14 of those days I was guided by Birding Panama, and specifically by Euclid “Kilo” Campos — who has seen more bird species in Panama than anyone.

Our group of twelve, drawn from Canada, Sweden, Australia, and Guernsey, as well as California, North Carolina, and Texas, made for fine company throughout. For the trip, I tallied 363 species, 116 of them lifers.
